Chris was educated at Cordwalles Preparatory School and Michaelhouse. He studied at the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg where he obtained a BA Degree and thereafter at the University of the Witwatersrand where he obtained his LLB.

He served his Articles in Johannesburg from 1978 to 1980. After qualifying he became a Legal Advisor in Johannesburg before moving to Durban in 1984, back into private practice.

In 1986 Chris was admitted to the Bar and practiced as an Advocate in Durban until 1991 when he relocated to Pietermaritzburg and joined J Leslie Smith & Company Incorporated in the Litigation Department.

He specialises in High Court Litigation, especially Commercial and Insurance related litigation.

Chris competes in triathlons and represents both Province and Country in the sport. He also enjoys horse riding in his spare time.
