Patrick Leslie Smith
Patrick was educated at Marist Brothers Colleges in Pietermaritzburg (St Charles’ College) and Johannesburg (Observatory).
He studied law at the University of Natal and was admitted as an Attorney in 1955. Patrick subsequently joined the “family firm” J. Leslie Smith & Company, founded by his father in 1921 where he rose to Senior Partner in 1975, a position he held until retirement as a Partner in June 1998.
During his career Patrick specialised in Commercial Law, drafting of complex Agreements, administration of Deceased Estates, advising on the settling of and registration of Trusts and Investments.
He is presently a practicing Consultant in the firm, assisting with the administration of Trusts and Deceased Estates.
Patrick served for 15 years after the 2nd World War in the Citizen Force of the Natal Field Artillery where he rose to the rank of Major as Battery Commander of 4th Battery. He enjoys wild life, in particular “birding”, is a keen photographer and keeps and breeds exotic parrots and finches. He serves on the Management Board of Msunduzi Hospice in Pietermaritzburg. He is actively involved in charitable church activities assisting the poor, and is a Canon Law judge on the church Marriage Tribunal.
